At Little Stars Day Care, a term after your child’s third birthday you will be entitled to claim Education funding from the local education authority, like schools we are registered with Estyn. We follow the the Foundation Phase, which is an approach to learning for children from 3 to 7 years old in Wales.

Learning through play is an important part of the care and education that we provide.

The foundation phase framework is designed to help staff facilitate learning through play by planning an environment and activities that ensure a child’s learning and development is as natural and as fun as possible. We understand that it may sometimes seem like a child is ‘just playing’. In fact, every activity is an opportunity for children to learn valuable skills that will shape their growth and future development.

Foundation Phase Curriculum Aims

The Foundation Phase curriculum aims to excite and stimulate children’s learning to secure the best possible start for all children in Wales. It aims to provide a learning continuum in all areas of learning and development and flexibility to meet the diverse needs of all children. The curriculum also aims to help children learn and develop their thinking skills and to acquire positive attitudes towards lifelong learning.

The seven areas of learning are:

Personal/Social Development & Wellbeing
Here the children are building a tower, playing parallel with a friend, turn taking and sharing and showing patience.
Language, Literacy & Communication
Here the children got to choose which reading story sack they would like Jordan to read. The children showed interest  when the story was being read and pointed to pictures in the story.

Mathematical Development
Mathematics
This area of learning focuses on children developing their skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics by solving problems.
Welsh
Here we are painting leaves and getting the children to repeat the colours in Welsh.
Knowledge & Understanding of the World
Here Sawyer is feeding a lamb. Sawyer understands that sheep live on a farm. When questioning Sawyer about the sheep he also said the sheep had wool.

Creative Development
Everyone was included in this musical discovery session. We then hung the chosen items on our fence and allowed the children to create their own music outside.

The children at our setting love music we found that during our christmas concert music helped the children to concentrate on the songs and actively get involved, but when developing our outdoors we wanted to reinforce the fact that music is something for everybody, and that music can be made out of anything.

We then selected a hand full of every day items and we asked the children whether they thought we could use the item outdoor to create noise. The children had fun testing different items, by hitting them and trying to make noise, Harry & Sawer both picked their favourite item that they would like to put up outside in our music area.

Children’s Personal and Social Development and Well Being is at the heart of the Foundation Phase and should be developed across the curriculum.
